Dear Resident As part of ASB Awareness Week, weβre raising awareness about the impact of illegal e-scooter use, Voi misuse and nuisance vehicles in our communities. β οΈ Illegal e-scooters (privately owned): The use of privately owned e-scooters on public roads, pavements and public places is illegal. Their use in these areas puts pedestrians and other road users at significant risk. They are only permitted to be used on privately owned land with the land owners permission. If seen being used in public areas they are at risk of being seized and destroyed. π΄ Voi e-scooters (rental scheme): Voi e-scooters can be used legally, but only when used correctly. Misuse includes riding on pavements, carrying passengers, or using them dangerously or antisocially. β
How to legally use a Voi e-scooter: You must hold at least a provisional or full UK driving licenceYou must create an account via the Voi app and complete the safety instructionsScooters must be used on roads and cycle lanes only (not pavements)Only one rider per scooterYou must park responsibly in designated areas at the end of your rideβ‘ E-bikes: E-bikes with a motor output over 250 watts are classed as motor vehicles. This means they require insurance, tax and a driving licence to be used legally. Higher-powered or modified e-bikes used without this are illegal. ποΈ Nuisance vehicles: Off-road bikes and other motorised vehicles used irresponsibly can cause distress, noise nuisance and danger within our neighbourhoods. Northamptonshire Police are actively tackling this through Operation Storm Echo, targeting those using vehicles illegally or in an Anti-Social manner. π Section 59 Warning (Police Reform Act 2002): Police can issue a Section 59 warning if a vehicle is being used in a way that causes alarm, distress or annoyance. A warning stays in place for 12 months and applies to both the vehicle and the driver at the time.If the same vehicle is used again in an Anti-Social way within that period, police can seize it immediately. The warning also applies to the driver, meaning if they are caught driving another vehicle antisocially, that vehicle can also be seized. π¨ What should you do? β
